Ms. Miriklis believes that education is the key to elevating women’s status and solving the issue of gender equality. She used the example of women in India in underprivileged neighborhoods. These women witnessed the impact that education have on their children, motivating them to improve their own literacy and learn new skills through group learning sessions. Gradually, they empowered themselves by building their own business through a microcredit and social business model similar to that of Prof Yunus. Some of the husbands of these women, who used to deal with drinking and gambling issues, also began to change their own behaviors for the better. While these changes take a while to materialize, they are critical steps towards improving the livelihood of those in poverty.

Ms. Sawadogo shared her experiences from Burkina Faso. Although she received higher education, she was restricted by her then husband from working. To fight for her deserved freedom to work, she ultimately chose to divorce her then husband. Her journey to raise her children on her own is truly an inspiring story.
